How to Read Sargam Notes
Learn Indian classical Sargam (swarlipi) for harmonium and bansuri — Sa Re Ga Ma map to keys so you can play melodies without Western sheet music.
What is Sargam?
Sargam (सरगम) is the Indian classical way to write melodies using seven swara names — Sa, Re, Ga, Ma, Pa, Dha, Ni — instead of Western letters (A–G). On Kpnotes, every Bollywood Sargam page includes harmonium scale (Kali / Safed) and flute pitch keys so you can play in tune immediately.
The seven shuddha swaras
These are the pure notes of Bilawal thaat (like the white keys starting from C in Western music, but anchored on your chosen Sa):
- Sa (S) — root / tonic (tune Tanpura or drone here first)
- Re (R), Ga (G), Ma (M), Pa (P), Dha (D), Ni (N)
On harmonium, place your left-hand chord on the recommended Sa key shown on each song page. On bansuri, close three upper holes for Sa on the suggested flute size.
Komal (flat) and teevra (sharp) swaras
Not every swara is shuddha (natural):
- Komal Re, Ga, Dha, Ni — written lowercase in Latin (
r g d n) or underlined in Hindi (रे, ग, ध, नि) - Teevra Ma — uppercase
Mor Hindi म॑
Example: S r G m P d N S uses komal Re, Ga, Dha and teevra Ma.
Mandra and Taar saptak (octaves)
- Mandra (lower octave) — dot below the swara:
.N .D Por Hindi with dot under the character - Madhyam (middle) — plain swaras with no marker
- Taar (higher octave) — apostrophe above:
S' R' G'
Harmonium Kali / Safed scales
Each Kpnotes Sargam song lists a harmonium key such as Safed 2 (D) or Kali 1 (C#). Set your Sa reed to that pitch before you play. The flute recommendation (e.g. D Natural Medium) matches the same tonal centre for bansuri players.
How to practice a song page
- Open a song from the Sargam archive.
- Note the harmonium and flute scale chips in the hero.
- Read swaras left to right under each lyric line — use the S R G M or सरगम tab.
- Loop one phrase at a slow tempo, then connect sections (Intro → Pallavi → Antara).
- Prefer piano letter notes instead? Use the cross-link on the same song when available.
